Terms & Policies

The complete legal framework for using Papyra. Effective January 1, 2026. Operated by Aithena LLC, a Colorado limited liability company.

Plain-language summary

This page is the complete legal framework that governs your use of Papyra. The full text below is binding, but we know most users won't read 8,000 words of legal language, so here is the substance in plain English:

  • Who we are. Papyra is a service operated by Aithena LLC, a Colorado limited liability company.
  • What we do. We help students write academic essays with verifiable, real citations. We do not help students cheat.
  • Your content. What you write stays yours. What we generate for you, you own.
  • Our refunds. Sales are generally final. If our service fails — broken citations, system error, content not delivered — we issue a refund or credits. EU and UK consumers retain their statutory cooling-off rights.
  • Your data. We share necessary data with the AI providers we use (Anthropic, Google, OpenAI), our payment processor (Stripe), our email service (Resend), and academic databases (CrossRef, OpenAlex, Semantic Scholar). We do not sell your data. We never use your content to train AI models without your explicit consent.
  • Disputes. Disagreements are resolved by arbitration under Colorado law, except where local consumer protection law overrides.

If anything below contradicts this summary, the full text below governs. The summary is for reading; the full text is for binding effect.

Terms of Use

These Terms of Use ("Terms") apply to your access to and use of Papyra and any associated services, including the website at papyra.co, the application accessible at app.papyra.co, our APIs, and any related software (collectively, the "Services"), all of which are provided by Aithena LLC ("we," "us," or "Aithena").

By accessing or using the Services, you agree to be bound by these Terms and our Privacy Policy (set out in the section below). If you do not agree, do not use the Services.

1. Eligibility and accounts

Age. You must be at least 13 years old, or the minimum age of digital consent in your jurisdiction (whichever is greater), to create an account. If you are under 18 (or under the age of majority in your jurisdiction), you may use the Services only with the consent of a parent or legal guardian who agrees to be bound by these Terms on your behalf.

Account registration. When you create an account, you must provide accurate, complete, and current information. You are responsible for keeping your account credentials confidential and for all activity that occurs under your account. Notify us promptly at [email protected] if you suspect unauthorized access.

One account per person. Each user may maintain only one account. Creating multiple accounts to circumvent free-tier limits, abuse promotional credits, or evade past suspensions is grounds for termination of all associated accounts.

2. What the Services do

Papyra is an AI-assisted academic writing platform. Our principal feature is the generation of essay drafts with citations that are verified against real, published academic sources through CrossRef, OpenAlex, and Semantic Scholar before any reference is incorporated into a draft.

The Services include, where applicable: essay drafting, citation verification, document correction (post-hoc editing of an existing document based on professor comments and additional sources), presentation generation, and related academic writing tools. The specific features available to you depend on the plan you purchase or the credits in your account.

3. Acceptable use and academic integrity

Papyra is positioned as the academic AI tool for honest students. The position is intentional and is reflected in these Terms.

You agree that you will not use the Services to:

  • Submit work generated by the Services as your own original work in violation of your institution's academic integrity policy. You are responsible for understanding what your institution permits and for using Papyra outputs in a manner that complies with that policy. Where your institution prohibits AI assistance entirely, you should not use Papyra for that course or assignment.
  • Use the Services to violate the rights of others, including intellectual property rights, privacy rights, or contractual rights.
  • Generate content that is illegal, fraudulent, defamatory, harassing, or that targets minors inappropriately.
  • Attempt to reverse-engineer, decompile, or extract the source code, models, or internal mechanisms of the Services, except where such activity is expressly permitted by applicable law.
  • Scrape, automate, or programmatically extract data from the Services beyond what is permitted by your plan and the API terms (where applicable).
  • Use the Services to create a product or service that competes with Papyra, including by training another AI model on Papyra outputs.
  • Disrupt, interfere with, or compromise the security of the Services, our systems, or our other users.
  • Misrepresent Papyra outputs as having been created without AI assistance in contexts where such representation is required (for example, formal sworn declarations or contexts where AI use must be disclosed by law or institutional policy).

What this means in practice. Papyra produces drafts, citations, and academic structure. The student is expected to engage with the output, understand the underlying material, and submit work in compliance with their institution's policy on AI assistance. We provide the tool; you provide the academic engagement.

4. Your content; our content

Your inputs. You retain all rights to the prompts, files, drafts, and other materials you submit to the Services ("Inputs"). You grant us a limited license to process Inputs as necessary to provide the Services to you (including transmission to our AI providers and citation databases as described in the Privacy Policy below).

Your outputs. Subject to your compliance with these Terms, we assign to you all rights, title, and interest in the content the Services generate for you in response to your Inputs ("Outputs"). You own your essays, citations, and other Output. You may use them for any lawful purpose.

Similar Outputs to other users. Because the Services are built on machine learning, two users with similar prompts may receive Outputs that share structural or substantive similarities. Our assignment of rights does not extend to other users' Outputs, and we cannot guarantee that any particular Output is unique.

Our use of Inputs and Outputs. We may use Inputs and Outputs to operate, maintain, secure, and improve the Services, to comply with legal obligations, and to enforce these Terms. We do not use your Inputs or Outputs to train or fine-tune AI models without your explicit, opt-in consent. When the Services display example essays or showcase content publicly, we use only content that is either entirely fictional, demonstrably synthetic, or content for which the user has provided written consent.

5. Subscriptions, credits, and billing

Plans and credits. The Services may be purchased on a subscription basis or via prepaid service credits. The specific plan options, pricing, and credit allocations are presented at checkout and may change from time to time. By purchasing, you authorize us (acting through our payment processor) to charge the payment method you provide.

Currency. Charges are in U.S. dollars unless otherwise stated. International users may incur additional fees from their payment provider for currency conversion or international transactions.

Subscription renewals. Subscription plans renew automatically at the end of each billing period until canceled. The renewal charge is billed to the payment method on file.

Cancellation. You may cancel a subscription at any time from your account dashboard. Cancellation takes effect at the end of the current billing period; you retain access to paid features until the end of that period.

Credit expiration. Subscription-tier credits (where the plan allocates a number of documents per month) do not roll over. Unused credits at the end of a billing cycle are forfeited and reset at the start of the next cycle. Prepaid one-time credit purchases (where applicable) expire one year from the date of purchase unless otherwise stated.

Failed payments. If your payment method fails on a renewal charge, we will notify you and attempt to recharge. If the failure persists for more than seven days, we may downgrade or suspend your access until payment is received.

Pricing changes. We may change prices for the Services. Existing subscribers will receive at least 30 days' notice of any price increase before it takes effect. You may cancel your subscription at any time before the new price applies.

6. Refund policy

See the Refund Policy section below for the complete refund framework. In summary: charges for the Services are generally non-refundable, except where (a) the Services materially failed to deliver what you paid for (system error, undelivered output, citations that cannot be verified despite our verification system), or (b) applicable consumer protection law (notably, EU and UK statutory cooling-off rights) requires a refund.

7. Termination

By you. You may delete your account at any time by following the account-deletion procedure in your dashboard or by contacting us at [email protected]. Upon deletion, your account credentials are disabled, and we begin our standard data-deletion procedure as described in the Privacy Policy.

By us. We may suspend or terminate your access to the Services if (a) you violate these Terms, (b) we are required to do so by law, (c) your use of the Services creates a security or operational risk, (d) your account has been inactive for more than 12 months without an active subscription or unused credit balance, or (e) we discontinue the Services or a particular feature. We will provide reasonable notice except where prohibited by law.

Refund on involuntary termination. If we terminate your account other than for breach of these Terms, we will refund any unused, prepaid credits.

8. Disclaimers

THE SERVICES ARE PROVIDED "AS IS" AND "AS AVAILABLE." TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY APPLICABLE LAW, AITHENA AND ITS AFFILIATES DISCLAIM ALL WARRANTIES, EXPRESS, IMPLIED, OR STATUTORY, INCLUDING WITHOUT LIMITATION WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, NON-INFRINGEMENT, AND QUIET ENJOYMENT. WE DO NOT WARRANT THAT THE SERVICES WILL BE ERROR-FREE OR UNINTERRUPTED, THAT OUTPUTS WILL BE FREE OF DEFECTS, OR THAT ANY DEFECTS WILL BE CORRECTED.

OUTPUTS ARE GENERATED BY MACHINE LEARNING MODELS AND, WHILE OUR CITATION VERIFICATION SYSTEM IS DESIGNED TO PRODUCE BIBLIOGRAPHIES THAT ARE TRACEABLE TO REAL PUBLISHED SOURCES, WE DO NOT GUARANTEE THAT EVERY OUTPUT WILL BE FACTUALLY ACCURATE, FREE OF BIAS, OR APPROPRIATE FOR ANY PARTICULAR ACADEMIC OR PROFESSIONAL CONTEXT. YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR REVIEWING OUTPUTS AND VERIFYING THEIR ACCURACY BEFORE RELYING ON OR SUBMITTING THEM. SEE OUR AI & CITATIONS GUIDE FOR THE VERIFICATION PROTOCOL WE RECOMMEND.

9. Limitation of liability

TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY APPLICABLE LAW, IN NO EVENT WILL AITHENA, ITS AFFILIATES, OR ITS LICENSORS BE LIABLE FOR ANY INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, CONSEQUENTIAL, OR PUNITIVE DAMAGES, INCLUDING DAMAGES FOR LOST PROFITS, LOST DATA, OR LOSS OF GOODWILL, ARISING FROM OR RELATED TO YOUR USE OF THE SERVICES, EVEN IF WE HAVE BEEN ADVISED OF THE POSSIBILITY OF SUCH DAMAGES.

OUR AGGREGATE LIABILITY UNDER THESE TERMS WILL NOT EXCEED THE GREATER OF (A) THE AMOUNT YOU PAID US FOR THE SERVICES IN THE TWELVE MONTHS PRECEDING THE EVENT GIVING RISE TO THE CLAIM, OR (B) ONE HUNDRED U.S. DOLLARS ($100).

THE LIMITATIONS IN THIS SECTION APPLY TO THE FULLEST EXTENT PERMITTED BY APPLICABLE LAW. SOME JURISDICTIONS DO NOT ALLOW THE EXCLUSION OF CERTAIN WARRANTIES OR THE LIMITATION OF LIABILITY FOR CERTAIN DAMAGES, IN WHICH CASE THE LIMITATIONS APPLY ONLY TO THE EXTENT PERMITTED BY THAT LAW.

10. Indemnification

If you use the Services on behalf of a business or organization, you agree, to the extent permitted by law, to defend, indemnify, and hold harmless Aithena, its affiliates, and their respective officers, directors, employees, and agents from any claims, damages, liabilities, costs, and expenses (including reasonable attorneys' fees) arising from (a) your use of the Services in violation of these Terms, (b) your violation of any law or third-party right, or (c) any content you submit through the Services.

11. Dispute resolution and governing law

Informal resolution first. Before initiating any formal dispute, you agree to first contact us at [email protected] to attempt informal resolution. We will respond within 30 days of receiving your notice. Most disputes are resolved at this stage.

Arbitration. If informal resolution fails, any dispute, claim, or controversy arising out of or relating to these Terms or the Services that cannot be resolved by informal negotiation will be resolved by binding individual arbitration administered by the American Arbitration Association (AAA) under its Commercial Arbitration Rules. The arbitration will be conducted in Denver, Colorado, or by videoconference at the parties' option. Judgment on the award may be entered in any court having jurisdiction.

Class action waiver. You and Aithena agree that disputes will be resolved on an individual basis and not as a class, collective, or representative action. The arbitrator may not consolidate claims of multiple parties without the express agreement of both you and Aithena.

Opt-out. You may opt out of the arbitration agreement above by sending written notice to [email protected] within 30 days of first accepting these Terms. Opting out does not affect any other provision of these Terms.

Governing law. These Terms and any dispute arising under them are governed by the laws of the State of Colorado, U.S.A., without regard to conflict-of-laws principles. Where mandatory consumer protection law of your jurisdiction applies (notably, certain rights granted to consumers in the EU, UK, and other jurisdictions), those rights override any inconsistent provision in these Terms to the extent required.

Forum. Disputes that are not subject to arbitration (or for which arbitration has been validly opted out) will be brought exclusively in the state or federal courts located in Denver, Colorado, and the parties consent to personal jurisdiction in those courts.

12. Changes to these Terms

We may update these Terms from time to time to reflect changes to the Services, applicable law, or our business practices. When we make material changes, we will notify you at least 30 days in advance by email (to the address associated with your account) or by an in-product notification. Continued use of the Services after the effective date of an updated Terms constitutes acceptance. If you do not agree to an update, you may terminate your account before the effective date.

Non-material updates (such as clarifications that do not change the substance of the Terms) take effect upon posting on this page.

13. General provisions

Entire agreement. These Terms (together with the Privacy Policy and any service-specific terms presented at checkout) constitute the entire agreement between you and Aithena regarding the Services and supersede all prior agreements.

Severability. If any provision of these Terms is found to be unenforceable, the remaining provisions remain in effect.

No waiver. Our failure to enforce any right under these Terms is not a waiver of that right.

Assignment. You may not assign your rights under these Terms without our written consent. We may assign our rights to a successor entity without restriction.

Trade controls. The Services are subject to U.S. export control laws. You may not use or export the Services in violation of those laws or to any person or location subject to U.S. sanctions.

Refund Policy

Charges for the Services are generally non-refundable. We make exceptions only in limited, specific circumstances described below.

When we issue refunds

System failure or undelivered Output. If you paid for a deliverable (an essay, document correction, or other generated Output) and the Services failed to deliver it because of a system error on our side, you are entitled to either (a) a refund of the credits or amount charged for that specific deliverable, or (b) regeneration of the Output at no additional cost. You can request either remedy by contacting [email protected] with your account email and a description of what went wrong.

Verifiably broken citations. Our citation verification system is designed to retrieve real, published references from CrossRef, OpenAlex, and Semantic Scholar. If, despite this system, an Output we generated contains a citation that cannot be verified (the DOI does not resolve, the journal does not exist, the cited paper is not findable in any academic database) and you provide us with the specific reference, we will either issue a refund/credits for that deliverable or regenerate it at no cost.

Statutory rights of consumers in the EU, UK, and equivalent jurisdictions. If you are a consumer (an individual purchasing for personal, non-business use) in a jurisdiction that grants statutory cooling-off or refund rights — notably, the 14-day right of withdrawal under the EU Consumer Rights Directive (2011/83/EU) and equivalent rights under UK Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013 — those rights apply to you regardless of any "non-refundable" provision elsewhere in these Terms. To exercise these rights, contact [email protected] within the applicable cooling-off period.

Important note for digital content. Many jurisdictions, including the EU and UK, allow consumers to waive their cooling-off right when they explicitly request immediate provision of digital content (an essay, for example) and acknowledge they lose the right of withdrawal once the service begins. By clicking "Generate" or initiating production of an Output before the end of your cooling-off period, you agree to that waiver in jurisdictions where waiver is permitted.

Account termination by us without cause. If we terminate your account for any reason other than your breach of these Terms, we refund any unused, prepaid credits at the per-credit price you paid.

When we do not issue refunds

Outside the circumstances listed above, refunds are not available. In particular:

  • Refunds are not available for changes of mind after Output has been delivered to you.
  • Refunds are not available because an Output was rejected by your professor, institution, or any other third party. Papyra outputs are drafts that you are responsible for reviewing and revising; the academic acceptability of the final submission is the user's responsibility.
  • Refunds are not available for unused subscription-tier credits at the end of a billing cycle, because monthly credits do not roll over and are reset, not refunded.
  • Refunds are not available for partial periods of subscription. If you cancel a monthly subscription mid-cycle, you retain access until the end of the cycle but receive no pro-rated refund.
  • Refunds are not available for promotional credits, discounted plans, or referral bonuses.

How to request a refund

Email [email protected] from the email address associated with your Papyra account, including:

  • The order number or transaction date
  • A description of the problem (system failure, broken citation, etc.)
  • For broken-citation refunds: the specific reference(s) you believe cannot be verified

We aim to respond within 5 business days. Approved refunds are processed back to the original payment method within 10 business days. The actual time the refund appears on your statement depends on your payment provider.

In any such case, we apply the protections required by applicable law.

4. International transfers

Aithena LLC is a U.S. company. Our infrastructure and most of our processors are located in the United States. If you are in the EU, UK, or other jurisdictions with data-protection laws, your data is transferred to the U.S. for processing. We rely on the following safeguards for such transfers, as applicable:

  • Standard Contractual Clauses (SCCs) approved by the European Commission for transfers to processors that have signed them.
  • Adequacy decisions where they exist.
  • Other safeguards required by applicable law.

5. How long we keep data

Account data — for as long as your account is active, plus a reasonable period after deletion (typically 30 days) to allow for account recovery.

Content (Inputs and Outputs) — Inputs are retained while you have an active account so you can revisit your work. Outputs are retained for up to 12 months unless you delete them earlier through your account dashboard. Deleted content is purged from our active systems within 30 days; backup retention may be slightly longer for technical reasons.

Transaction records — retained for the period required by tax and accounting law (typically 7 years in the U.S.).

Communications — retained for 24 months after the last contact.

Analytics data — Google Analytics data is retained per Google's default retention period (currently 14 months for user-level data).

6. Your rights

Depending on your jurisdiction, you may have the following rights regarding your personal data:

  • Access — request a copy of the data we hold about you.
  • Correction — ask us to correct inaccurate or incomplete data.
  • Deletion — ask us to delete your account and personal data, subject to legal retention requirements.
  • Portability — receive your data in a structured, commonly used format.
  • Restriction — ask us to limit our processing of your data.
  • Objection — object to processing based on legitimate interests, including direct marketing.
  • Withdrawal of consent — withdraw consent where we rely on consent for processing.
  • Complaint — lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority. In the EU, this is the supervisory authority of your country of residence.

How to exercise. Email [email protected] from the email address associated with your account. We respond within 30 days (or sooner where required by law). We may ask for additional verification before fulfilling certain requests to protect against fraudulent access.

California residents. California residents have the rights described above under the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) and the California Privacy Rights Act (CPRA). We do not sell personal data as defined under those laws. The "Do Not Sell or Share My Personal Information" right is satisfied by our underlying practice of not selling data; no separate opt-out mechanism is needed.

7. Security

We protect your data with technical and organizational measures, including:

  • Transport Layer Security (TLS) encryption for all data in transit.
  • Encryption at rest for sensitive data on our infrastructure.
  • Access controls limiting which team members can access user data.
  • Regular security audits of our infrastructure.
  • Incident response procedures for suspected breaches.

No system is perfectly secure. Use a strong, unique password for your Papyra account, and do not share sensitive personal information (medical records, financial details unrelated to billing, etc.) in your prompts.

8. Children

The Services are not directed at children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal data from children under 13. If you believe we have collected information from a child under 13, contact [email protected] and we will delete it.

Third-Party Services

The following sections describe in more detail how each major third-party provider processes your data on our behalf. The summary table above is the operational view; what follows is the contractual and policy detail.

AI service providers (Anthropic, Google, xAI, DeepSeek)

Our generation and editing features are powered by AI models from third-party providers. Different plans use different providers — your specific provider for a given task is determined by the plan you purchase and the type of operation requested.

When you submit a prompt or document for generation, the relevant provider receives the content of your prompt and any associated context (sometimes including parts of previous prompts in the same session) for the purpose of producing the requested Output.

Each provider has its own data-handling commitments:

  • Anthropic — operates under their Privacy Policy and Terms of Service. As of 2026, Anthropic does not use API customer inputs to train its models by default.
  • Google (Gemini, Vertex AI) — operates under Google's Privacy Policy. Vertex AI customer inputs are not used to train Google's models.
  • xAI — operates under xAI's Privacy Policy. Used only for specific admin-tier features.
  • DeepSeek — operates under DeepSeek's Privacy Policy. Used only for economy-tier plans where this is disclosed at purchase.

We never share your account email, payment details, or other directly-identifying account information with these AI providers — only the prompt and contextual content needed for generation.

Citation databases (CrossRef, OpenAlex, Semantic Scholar)

The integrity of our citation system depends on real-time queries to academic databases. When the Services need to verify or retrieve a reference, we send a query to the relevant database (typically based on author name, title, or DOI). These queries do not include your account identity, the broader content of your essay, or other personal data — only the citation lookup itself.

OpenAlex requests our "polite pool" identifier ([email protected]) so they can contact us if our query patterns become problematic. CrossRef and Semantic Scholar do not require any account identifier for the query patterns we use.

Stripe (payments)

Payment processing is handled by Stripe, Inc. Stripe receives your payment card details directly through their secure checkout — we never see or store your full card number. Stripe sends us metadata about successful and failed transactions (last four digits, country, transaction amount) for our records.

Stripe's processing of your data is governed by Stripe's Privacy Policy. Stripe operates in the U.S. and the EU; the specific entity processing your payment depends on your billing location.

Resend (transactional email)

Account notifications, receipts, password reset emails, and similar transactional messages are delivered through Resend. Resend processes your email address and the message content to deliver the email. Resend's processing is governed by Resend's Privacy Policy.

Railway (hosting)

Our application infrastructure is hosted on Railway. Railway provides the servers, databases, and storage that hold the data we process. Railway's processing is governed by Railway's Privacy Policy.

Google Analytics

We use Google Analytics to understand aggregate usage patterns on our website. Google Analytics collects information including pages visited, session duration, browser type, and IP address. This data is processed by Google in accordance with the Google Privacy Policy. Google Analytics IP addresses are anonymized (the last octet is redacted) before processing where this option is technically available.

You can opt out of Google Analytics tracking by installing the Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on or by adjusting your cookie preferences through our cookie consent banner.

Cookie Policy

Cookies are small text files that websites place on your device to remember information about you. We use cookies on papyra.co and app.papyra.co for the purposes described below.

Cookies we use

Essential cookies. These cookies are required for the Services to function. They include session cookies (so you stay logged in across pages), CSRF protection cookies (to prevent cross-site request forgery attacks), and consent state cookies (to remember your cookie preferences). You cannot opt out of essential cookies because the Services would not work without them.

Analytics cookies (Google Analytics). These cookies (named _ga, _ga_*, and similar) help us understand how visitors use our website. They report aggregate data and do not personally identify you. You can opt out of analytics cookies through our cookie consent banner.

Payment cookies (Stripe). When you complete a purchase, Stripe sets cookies to facilitate the secure checkout flow. These are essential for the payment process.

We do not currently use marketing or advertising cookies. We do not currently run pixel-based tracking from social media platforms (Meta Pixel, TikTok Pixel, etc.).

Managing cookies

You can manage your cookie preferences in three ways:

  • Through our cookie consent banner, which appears on your first visit and is accessible via the "Cookie preferences" link in our footer.
  • Through your browser settings, which allow you to block or delete cookies. Note that blocking essential cookies will prevent the Services from working.
  • For Google Analytics specifically, you can install the opt-out browser add-on.
